How to Apply Press-On Nails: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
A complete beginner's guide to applying press-on nails so they actually last — from prep through removal — with the mistakes that ruin most first applications.
What you'll need
- Your MALENO press-on nail set
- Nail glue (included with most MALENO sets)
- Alcohol prep pad or rubbing alcohol with cotton
- Mini buffer or soft nail file
- Cuticle pusher (or orange stick)
- 10–15 minutes
Step 1 — Wash and dry your hands
Soap and water removes oils, lotion residue, and dust from your nails. Dry thoroughly with a lint-free towel. Wet or oily nails are the #1 cause of press-ons falling off within hours.
Step 2 — Push back your cuticles
Use a cuticle pusher or wooden orange stick to gently push the cuticle back from the base of each nail. This creates a clean canvas for the press-on to sit flush against the nail bed instead of riding on top of cuticle skin. Don't cut your cuticles — pushing is enough.
Step 3 — Lightly buff each nail
Run a soft buffer over the surface of each natural nail in 3–4 light strokes. You're not removing nail — you're just dulling the natural shine so the glue has texture to grip. Over-buffing thins your natural nails, so go very gentle.
Step 4 — Wipe with alcohol
Wipe each nail thoroughly with an alcohol prep pad or alcohol-soaked cotton pad. This removes any remaining oil, buffer dust, or residue. After this step, do NOT touch the nail surface with your fingers — your skin oils will transfer back and weaken the bond.
Step 5 — Match each press-on to the right finger
Lay all 10 press-ons out in order before applying. For MALENO custom sets, we label each press-on with which finger it belongs to. Double-check the match before you apply glue.
Step 6 — Apply glue and press
Apply a thin even layer of glue to your natural nail (not too much — excess glue will squeeze out the sides). Add a small dot of glue to the underside of the press-on. Place the press-on against the cuticle line first at a 45-degree angle, then press down flat onto the rest of the nail. Hold firmly for 15–20 seconds.
Repeat for all 10 nails, working one at a time so the glue doesn't dry before you apply.
Step 7 — File and shape (optional)
If any press-on hangs over the edge of your natural nail, gently file the side flush. If the cuticle line isn't perfect, you can add a tiny amount of cuticle oil after the glue has fully set (1+ hour) to soften the appearance.
Step 8 — Aftercare
- Avoid water for the first hour to let glue cure fully
- Apply cuticle oil daily once cured (1+ hour after application)
- Wear gloves for dishwashing and cleaning
- Don't use your nails as tools (opening cans, peeling stickers)
- If a nail lifts, reapply with fresh glue immediately rather than ignoring it
How to remove press-ons safely
Soak your hands in warm soapy water for 10–15 minutes. The glue will soften and you can gently rock each press-on side to side until it slides off. Don't pry or pull — that damages your natural nail. Clean any glue residue off the press-on with acetone if you want to reuse the set, and apply cuticle oil to your natural nails.
